Overview: Teach/research comparative history, economic systems, religious structures, but do it through a medium that is engaging for young students (sophomores). Work on skills such as research, presentation, web design, imovie composition, and writing.
Big Idea: Teach students comparative history through convincing them to teach others the same material. Use Civilization 5, a video game, as a way to invest them in the project, and create a website both dealing with the game but also meant to teach some broader issues in history the game tangentially touches.
Essential Question: Should we care about history? How can we creatively educate the public about some common historical concepts?
Guiding Activities: How can we design a high quality website designed to provide video tutorials to excellent Civilization 5 strategies, while simultaneously educating the public in regards to the history of the cultures, or the economic/religious/social practices inherent within the game?
- Familiarize the class with the game - Decide goals for the class website - Divide class according to roles (researcher, writer, web designer, presenter, editor) - Form 3-4 person game groups with a mix of skills needed for the playing, researching, and publishing strategies - Find ways to integrate history and concept review within the video guides
