Title Wasatch Academy's Impact on Global Warming

By Chris Hawk and Bill Bedford

Overview

The goal of this Challenge is to reduce the impact of vehicles in our community on global warming. Rooted in this Challenge will be an understanding of scientific background and the current patterns of fuel use on our campus. Solutions will both reduce current fossil fuel use as well as explore introducing alternative energy sources.

Big Idea

Sustainability, environmental ethics,

The Essential Question

What general factors contribute to the process of global warming? In what way does this school community contribute to this process? As an agent of change, how can we influence this process on a different scale?

Guiding Questions

What chemical events take place when fuel is combusted in a vehicle and how do these events lead to increased global temperatures?

What is our current use of fuel presently (daily? weekly? monthly?)

How do we measure the "carbon footprint" of this activity on the part of our school?

What possibilities exist to reduce the impact of this footprint?

Guiding Activities

Interview with School representatives to determine current use and purposes

Research alternatives to a) reduce current use and b) offset current impact

Research and connect with other schools for solutions

Create action plan and implement over timetables (day, week, month) with administration
